Guest Instructor - Brad Plourd
At just 30 years old, Brad Plourd has established himself as one of the premier drivers in the NHRA sportsman ranks. Plourd, who hails from the Seattle, Washington area originally, has 14 NHRA national event wins to his credit in three seperate categories (Super Stock, Stock, and Super Comp). He’s earned division championships in each of those categories, totaling 4 titles. He’s a constant fixture in the NHRA top ten points standings and owns a victory at the prestigious NHRA U.S. Nationals (where he drove John Coughlin’s JEGS dragster to the Super Comp crown in 2005), and the JEGS All-Star Shootout (Super Stock - 2004). He also recently became just the 12th driver in NHRA history to “double” in national event competition, winning both Super Comp and Stock at the 2012 NHRA Northwest Nationals at his home track, Pacific Raceways in Seattle.

Like many of our columnists here on ThisIsBracketRacing.com, Brad Plourd is a second generation racer who essentially grew up at the race track. Brad’s father, Bernie has driven in just about every sportsman category NHRA has to offer. He ran Super Comp in the late ‘80’s, before competing in Top Alcohol Dragster for the better part of a decade. That stint was highlighted by a Winter Nationals title in 1992. Bernie has also seen time behind the wheel in Stock, Competition Eliminator, and a variety of other classes and machines.

Brad Plourd got his first opportunity to follow in his father’s footsteps at age 11, competing in the newly introduced NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League. His career has flourished seemingly every season since. Plourd has competed in just about every NHRA sportsman category: Competition Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, and Top Dragster. He also licensed in a Pro Stock machine at Roy Hill’s School of Drag Racing a few years ago.

For the past five seasons, Plourd has driven the Lucas Oil backed Super Comp dragster owned by Charlotte Lucas, along with a variety of machines for other categories. In addition to Lucas Oil, Plourd receives backing from JEGS, Hoosier Racing Tire, and Huntsville Engine & Performance. Brad makes his living behind the wheel of sportsman racing machines, and currently resides in Avon, IN.
