Luke Bogacki's popular "On the Road" columns are archived here.  These columns have appeared on DragRaceResults.com for years, and we've even gone back deep into the records to find a handful of columns from the now defunct American Drag News.  Enjoy.

8/1/2011 - "On the Road" with Luke Bogacki, July 2011
In 10+ years of penning this “On the Road” column for DragRaceResults.com, I’ve learned some things based mainly on the feedback from you; my fellow racers, friends, and loyal DRR readers. In a nutshell, people will read about a winner, but it’s just not that interesting. People will read about a loser, and sympathize (unfortunately, in this sport everyone of us can relate). But what provides the most entertainment for the reader base is knuckleheaded moves, one-of-a-kind situations, and general bad luck. People really seem to get a kick out of it when I get to change wheel studs alongside the interstate, make 20+ mile rides on a moped, and defy most laws of logic and good sense.

5/1/2011 - "On the Road" with Luke Bogacki, April 2011
As I write this column, the new racing season is here for just about everyone South of Alaska (and honestly, you guys might be racing up there already, I really have no idea). My first offseason in Illinois provided my first real “off” season in recent history (for those of you down south, it gets too cold here for us to race). The break was actually welcome and much needed; I’ve been going wide open for the better part of a decade, so it was actually nice to spend three months away from the race track and recharge my batteries.

1/1/2011 - "On The Road" with Luke Bogacki, December 2010
Here it is nearly Christmas time and the memory of the 2010 racing season is becoming more distant everyday. In retrospect, the season went really well for me. Sure, there were times (well documented times in most cases) where things didn’t go my way and I was mad at the world, but overall it was a solid season. 2010 wasn’t my best season on the race track, but it was far from my worst.

Speaking of time flying, can you believe I’ve been writing this column for ten years? Can you believe Scott still keeps posting them? Can you believe you’re reading this? Again?

There have been some changes in my world since my last “On the Road” column back in December. For one, it’s 2010. In addition to the start of a new decade, 2010 marks the tenth consecutive year of “On the Road” here on DRR (that makes me feel kinda old). It’s really hard to believe, it seems like I just started penning these blogs yesterday.

That’s a wrap folks… The 2009 calendar year and racing season is in the books. On the race track, I’m happy to look back on another solid season. While 2009 wasn’t the best year I’ve had on the race track in terms of profit, I think it’s safe to say it was my best season in terms of national recognition.

Alright, who turned the page of the calendar to October (nearly November?) Seriously, it feels like the 2009 season has flown by while I wasn’t looking. They say time flies when you’re having fun; and I know from experience that the days pass really quickly when you’re constantly on the run. The last several months have brought both for me: a lot of work and a lot of fun, so I guess it’s no wonder that summer seemed to pass me by.

Following a successful outing at the Million Dollar Race, I was faced with a decision as to where to compete the following weekend. Rather than ride my bracket racing luck and go to the final Tenn-Tuck event at Bowling Green, I elected to beat my head into the wall at an NHRA national event, that, as we've established, I cannot win.

Alright guys, time for the second half of this column. When I left off last time, I was happy to be headed home from a 3-week roadie that ended at Indianapolis. The joy of Woodville was short-lived, however, as I ventured West the following Thursday. That afternoon, I made a quick stop at Holly Springs Motorsports.

As usual, I’m way behind with this column. Instead of a monthly recap, I’ve let this drag on for three, so my incessant rambling will go on entirely too long this time around, and I can already tell that we’ll split this up into two articles, so as not to run your printer out of paper before you retreat to the can for some reading.

We refer to the months of December and January as the “off-season” in racing, although this season it sure didn’t seem like much of break. It seems every year that the season lasts longer, and starts earlier, and in those few precious weeks in between it seems like I stack more and more projects onto my workload every season. In short, I feel like I haven’t taken a breath from 2007, and here we are knee-deep in 2008!

I’m going to kick this column off with the two words I’ve used to start every season-ending column for the past 7 years: It’s Over!!! I know, it’s mid-December, and it’s been over for awhile. But hey, I’ve been busy. Okay, maybe I’m just lazy. At any rate, here’s some material for your next trip to the commode from the months of October and November.

Normally, this would be one of those columns that’s not real easy to read. As I’ve said before, these types of things are a lot more fun when the author is struggling--I think everyone can associate with that, and it’s nice to occasionally laugh “at” the writer rather than with him. Over the last six weeks I’ve been really fortunate on the race track--I’ve been on a roll nearly equal to the one that I started the season with (truthfully, 2007 has been an unbelievable year, and it’s really been good from start to finish).

Hey, I’m getting better! It’s only been two months since my last check-in with this “monthly” tale of woe! I know I’ve talked about it before, but this sport can give the biggest swings of momentum... Those swings effect confidence, ego, and more than anything, checkbooks! In the last two months I’ve been on a roller coaster ride--the highs have been awesome, the lows... Well, I guess the lows make me appreciate the highs that much more!

It’s where bracket races are won or lost. “There are two ends to the race track,” I know each of you have heard that before. In the past few columns, we’ve discussed (1) knowledge--knowing and understanding what needs to happen in order to win a given round and (2) having an idea of your reaction time, how it corresponds to your opponent, and how to use this information to your advantage.

That’s right racers and fans, for most of us the 2003 season is in the books. COOL IT!!! Engine cooling and operating systems have long been an overlooked part of bracket and class racing. It wasn’t long ago that a street-type crank driven water pump and thermostat was considered sufficient. Over time, racers have learned the value of consistent engine temperature, and the effect that varying tension on the motor (belt drive water pumps) as well as free flowing coolant have on performance and consistency.
